Text of the Review:
I am an ESL teacher, licensed by the Israeli Board of Education to teach on the elementary and junior high school levels. I started teaching when I was still a university student and have eighteen years of classroom experience and in tutoring schoolchildren. I’m bilingual, but not a native speaker of English.
Over the years, I've been asked time and again to give private lessons to adults, and I've always refused. But several months ago, I found myself in a situation where I couldn't refuse.
Just some conversation practice, he said. Before an important business trip, he specified. Because his conversational English was a bit rusty, he felt.
As soon as I agreed, I regretted making the commitment. How to start? I know the school curriculum, but nothing there would be relevant to a businessman on a business trip. Where to find materials? What sort of lesson plan to prepare?
I began surfing the net, and came across the E-Guide, “How to Become a Personal ESL Trainer”. When I made the decision to order it, I didn’t know what to expect (when ordering via the internet, you can’t really browse). I didn’t want to make a fool of myself and so was getting desperate for a direction, some advice. I would have been satisfied with that.
I got much, much more. This is what I want to say about the book:
| 1. | It includes everything: Evaluation, Materials, Lesson Planning. Most importantly, it provides an excellent approach to teaching adults – which is very different from teaching children. |
| |
| 2. | It is easy to follow: Although there is a lot to absorb, the language is clear and the advice is doable. The evaluation worked well, I was able to locate material that suited my student’s needs/level and the basic lesson plan was easy enough to implement. |
| |
| 3. | It works: In conversation lessons, a teacher must find a balance between teaching and conversing and the guide taught me how to do just that and they were very effective. |
| |
| 4. | The author delivers what she says she will: When I saw her promise for ongoing support, I was skeptical. But the two times I sent her an e-mail to clarify a point, I received a prompt, professional reply. |
