“The book is user- friendly: Very clear, concise and encouraging.”
Dear Miriam,
This is a wonderful book!
I have known you for 2 decades, since I worked with you at the
English Center in Beer Sheva.
I have always admired your knowledge, professionalism, and love
of the English language. In this book you express your love of
teaching (and teachers) through your guidance in how to become
an English “personal trainer”.
The book is user-friendly: very clear, concise and encouraging.
It covers everything one needs to know on how to be an English as
a Second Language personal trainer. From the initial interview with
the prospective student, to web sites and recommended teaching materials.
From detailed lesson plan, to tailoring the lesson to the students’
personal needs. From tips on how to spur conversation with your students,
to tips on how to start your business as an English language personal trainer.
This is a gem of a book for anyone who wishes to start out as an ESL teacher,
but also for those with experience who are looking to improve their style
of teaching. I will surely refer back to this book for advice in
improving my ESL teaching.
Best wishes,
R. Benhamou

“. . . your book manages to the theoretical side with solid, practical direction.”
Dear Miriam,
I want to write to you to
tell you how much I’m appreciating your book.
I recently completed my BA at the University of Manitoba. In considering
my career options, I realized that I’ve always had very good
language skills and that, in our region of Canada
(with its many communities of non-English speakers), there
is a lot of ESL work available. I registered for a Tefl
certification course which I will be completing this month.
I now have your E-guide also and I want to share my feelings about
it: The course I’m doing is strong on theory but weak on
application whereas your book manages to interweave the theoretical
side with solid, practical directions.
Let me give you an example: Your chapter on placement
testing not only gives a working model of a language
assessment test, but directions on how to administer
the oral part, how to evaluate both the written and oral
sections, how to interpret the relationship between them
and what kind of materials are most suitable as a result.
At each stage of this procedure, you explain the theories
underpinning the techniques. This is very different and much
more helpful for the beginning teacher than the way the
subject was handled in my course!
I will start to interview for jobs soon and feel much
more confident, thanks to you.
I’m also now thinking about giving private instruction
too you make it sound so exciting and so easy.
Gratefully,
Stephanie Sures,
Winnipeg, Canada
